Day 1

Arrival at Kastrup airport, meet with local guide and transfer in private coach to Jacobsen's Restaurant (Arne Jacobsen, 1932) in Klampenburg. Lunch on the terraces overlooking the ocean (weather permitting) and in the afternoon, walk around the buildings by Jacobsen in the neighbourhood of Bellevue: a theatre, terraced housing and several private homes. Proceed to the nearby Ordupgaard Museum of Art, (new wing by Zaha Hadid, 2005), for a brief visit. In the late afternoon, transfer to the first skyscraper in Copenhagen, the Radisson SAS Hotel (Jacobsen, 1960), inspired by Lever house in New York (SOM). Free time and dinner on own.

Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Departure for the Copenhagen Architecture Centre (Nielsen, 1996) and meet with an expert on contemporary Danish architecture for an hour lecture on Danish characteristics and trends in architecture and design. Departure for tour on bike, (or a driven bike-taxi for the less athletic), with a specialised guide to see the most important modern and contemporary buildings in the city, including the Danish Design Centre (Larsen, 1994), the Copenhagen Opera House (Larsen, 2006) and the Danish National Bank Building (Jacobsen, 1966). Coffee break at the Paustian House of Furniture (Jørne Utzon, 1987), then proceed to the New Carlsberg Glyptotek (extension Larsen, 1994) and the Kalvebod Brygge quay, developed around 2000-2002, with offices, retail space and the Nykredit Bank.
Then on to the award winning, 55,000 sqm Christianbro Office and Residential Complex (Larsen/ Rådgivende, 2000). The tour continues to the extension of the National Library, known as the Black Diamond (Schmidt/ Hammer/ Lassen, 1999) and to the auditorium by Jean Nouvel, inaugurated in January 2009. Free time inside the building and free time for lunch at the tables at Søren K restaurant and cafè on the Canal.
Proceed to Brygge island and cycle through the neighbourhood with new and contemporary residential buildings like Gemini Housing (MVRDV/ JJW Arkitekter, 2006), then on to Copenhagen Zoo with time to see the new Elephant house (Foster & Partners, 2007) and on to Bredgade for modernist shopping/window shopping. Drop bikes off and return to hotel. Dinner on own.


Day 3

Buffet breakfast and transfer to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, once a private home. The property is located directly on the shore of the Øresund in Humlebæk, 35 kilometers north of Copenhagen, with its’ amazing collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by Lichtenstien, Wharhol, Kiefer, Giacometti and Picasso. Lunch in the sculpture garden perched above the sea between the museum's two wings, with works by Moore, Calder and Arp.
After lunch, return to town and in the afternoon, eco tour of the city, in what is left of the world famous hippy neighbourhood, Cristiania. Then on to the green neighbourhood of Norrebro, with some 33,000 residents, Frediksberg sustainable architecture centre and some of the gardens around the city. Retern to hotel passing by the National Gallery (extension by Møllers, 1998), which incorporated the façade of the art nouveau building within a glass frame. Return to hotel, dinner on own.


Day 4

Breakfast buffet at hotel and departure for Øresund City, the latest area still undergoing development. Guided tour of the new buildings and complexes planned mostly after the opening of the 16 kilometre Øresund bridge, (2000), that links Copenhagen to the Swedish city of Malmö. The masterplan of the area, by Daniel Libeskind, comprises several residential buildings, including the Øresund City Housing (Plot Architects, 2006), and T-Hussen (Steven Holl, under construction). The tour proceeds, crossing the bridge to Malmö, to see the HSB Turning Torso (Calatrava, 2006), a 45 floor building containing 147 apartments and office space. Guided walk through the historical city centre of town, free time for lunch and a visit to the Swedish Design Centre.
In the afternoon, visit to the site of the 2001 International Expo Bo0: some 85,000 m² of what was once an industrial area, transformed into the ‘green city of tomorrow’. The homes have a maximum consumption of 105 kW/m² per year for heating, cooling and electricity, entirely provided by renewable forms of energy. Departure for Copenhagen airport and outbound flight.
