Day 1

Tinguely Museum
Tinguely Museum

Arrive in town at Krafft Hotel, a small design hotel on the banks of the river Rhine, renovated in 2007. Meet with local guide specialised in contemporary architecture and walk to the Tinguely Museum (Mario Botta, 1996), donated to the city in celebration of the centenary of Hoffmannn-la Roche pharmaceutical company. Lunch at the museum cafè and introductory talk on socio-political factors that conditioned the development of the city. Free time to visit the permanent collection of the museum which includes several pieces by Niki de Saint Phalle as well as a vast collection of mechanised sculptures by Tinguely. In the late afternoon guided walk back to the hotel along the banks of the Rhine passing by the contemporary urban landscape Italian Garden (Luciano Fabbro, 1994), dinner on own and over night stay.


Day 2

Beyeler Foundation

Breakfast buffet at hotel and departure for an architectural city tour concentrating on the works of Herzog & de Meuron. The tour covers the following buildings and complexes (where possible, interior as well as exterior):
Rehabilitation Centre (Herzog & de Meuron, 2002), The Church of St. Anthony (Karl Moser, 1927), Euregio-Geschäftshaus – retail and office space (Richard Meier, 1998), Ausbildungszentrum - UBS Conference and Training Centre (Diener & Diener, 1994), the Zentral-stellwerk - rail traffic control room (Herzog & de Meuron, 1999), Schaulager – Art stockage centre (Herzog & de Meuron, 2003), Sportanlage Pfaffenholz Stadium (Herzog & de Meuron,1993), Swiss Bank Association Building (Mario Botta, 1995), Pax Insurance Building (Burgin/ Nissen/ Wentzlaff, 1989), La Baloise Insurance Building (Diener & Diener, 1994).
Transfer to the Beyeler Foundation (Renzo Piano Building Workshop, 2000). Lunch at the cafè of the museum 127 meters long representing a ship anchored next to a busy road. Free time to visit the museum building and collection and the park. Return to hotel, dinner on own.


Day 3

Vitra Design Museum
Vitra Design Museum

Breakfast buffet at hotel and departure for the nearby German town of Wiel am Rhein. Arrive at the Vitra Headquarters, Factory and Museum. Four hour guided walk covering the following buildings on the site: Service Station (Jean Prouvè, around 1930), Fire Station (Zaha Hadid, 1993), Factory (Alvaro Siza, 1994), Factory (Nicolas Grimshaw, 1986), Vitra Offices and Musuem (Frank Gehry, 1989). Free time to visit the running exhibition.
Private lunch buffet in the courtyard of the Vitra Conference Pavilion (Tadao Ando, 1993). After lunch illustration of plans and models of other buildings under construction on the site by SANAA and Herzog & De Meuron (expected opening in 2009). Visit the permanent exhibition on ‘Ergonomics in the Office Space’ and 200 of the most famous chairs produced by Vitra (in all around 4000).
Return to Basel passing through the town of Wiel am Rhein known as the "City of Chairs" to see some of the 40 installations of gigantic chairs in public spaces. Arrive at hotel and dinner on own.


Day 4

Notre Dame du Haut
Notre Dame du Haut

Breakfast buffet at hotel and departure for the French town of Ronchamp (about 100 km). Visit to the Church of Notre Dame du Haut (Le Corbusier, 1955), the first church designed by Le Corbusier, accommodating 200 worshipers, which has become a place for pilgrimage (for both religious as well as architectural reasons) and remains the architect's most visited building. Lunch at a nearby farm and departure for Firminy (about 400 km).
Arrive in the late afternoon in town and visit to the Church of St Pierre, completed in 2006 on Le Corbusier’s original plans (1965). The authenticity of the church remains in question. Dinner on own and sleep over in small hotel in the centre of town.

Breakfast buffet at hotel and departure for guided tour of the area of Firminy-Verte, guided tour of the Cultural Centre (1965); the City Stadium (1965) and Unitè d’Abitation Les Bruneaux (1966), all by Le Corbusier. Return to Basel or to Lyon for flight/train home.
