Design Week Tour

Design Week is just around the corner.
It may be just one week, but you haven’t really experienced Milan until you’ve revelled in the Fuorisalone, that spontaneous, yearly extravaganza of design-related presentations, exhibitions, installations, performances and parties running parallel to the Salone del Mobile.

Viaggi di Architettura has the expert guides and the bespoke itineraries you need to tap into the flood and stay afloat.
If it’s the annual climax and the epitome of urban Milan as Design Capital, it’s hardly limited to interiors and industrial design: today’s Fuorisalone also embraces innovations in technology and telecommunications, art, fashion, food and even automobiles.
Where? In stunning temporary venues all over the city, with the usual concentrations in Brera, Tortona, Ventura Lambrate, Porta Venezia, San Babila, the 5 Vie, Sant’Ambrogio and others. The Fuorisalone has no central organisation, you see, so design districts and zones materialise from private initiatives. The big new entry is Isola Design District, in the shadow of Porta Nuova’s twenty-first century skyline.
And bear in mind that year-round stores, galleries, showrooms etc. wade into the fray with their own exceptional opening hours, happenings and carousing.

The events? Well over 1000 this year. Get an idea of your staggering options here.
So cutting-edge design is on the streets of Milan, accessible to all. The other half of Design Week, the Salone del Mobile held out at the Rho Fairgrounds, is of course essentially a trade fair. But its SaloneSatellite, focusing on young designers, is open to the public all week, and the rest during the last two days.
