Day 1

Arrive at Arlanda airport and meet with local guide specialised in Scandinavian Architecture. Transfer with private coach to the centre of town for a walking tour of the following areas: Södra, comprised by a station, residential areas and retail spaces (Bofill/ various, 1991), the Fatbursparken project (White, Haeberlein, Henning Larsen, and various others, early 90’s), and the renovation and requalification of the Fatbursparken factory (Gert Wingårdh, 2004).
The tour moves on to the Kulturhuset (Peter Celsing, 1972), a hive of contemporary, international and cultural activities like exhibitions, theatre etc., with over 3 million visitors every year. The building is an example of the building boom that the city underwent in the 60’s and 70’s. Then, on to the areas of Gärdet and Slussen and lastly, to the XVII century historic centre of the town Gamla Stan. Free time for lunch at one of the typical cafès on the cobblestoned squares, then transfer and check in to the Clarion Hotel, dinner on own.


Day 2

Breakfast at the hotel and meet with guide for a walk to the Architecture/urban planning/landscape architects/interior design studio, White. Meet with an architect working for the firm who will illustrate the latest and most interesting projects that the firm is currently working on.
After the talk, transfer by boat to Hammarby Sjostad, a green neighbourhood with 8,000 flats and extremely high environmental standards in terms of building criteria and materials, heating and cooling, waste management, traffic, etc. Meet with representative from the visitors centre and see a slide presentation followed by Q and A.
Free time for lunch on Hammarby and in the afternoon, transfer to the Public Library (Gunnar Asplund, 1928), and the areas of Sankt Eriks (Alexander Wolodarski and various other) and Klara Strand (1998). Proceed on to Woodland Crematorium (Asplund, 1920), listed by Unesco as part of the World Heritage.
Return to hotel, dinner on own.


Day 3

Design House Stockholm

Breakfast buffet at hotel.
Meet with guide for a full day tour of Scandinavian Design including the following designers and atelier: 10 Swedish Designers creating a large range of practical objects in various forms and colours; Nordiska Galleriet specialised in mid-century, modern Scandinavian furniture and objects, still produced today; Ordning & Reda chain specialised in colourful Swedish design stationary; Svensk Sljd, a very original Swedish handicraft; Design House Stockholm, with objects by the 25 most famous local designers; Svenskt Tenn historic home furnishing and fabric store, founded by Estrid Ericson, selling artwork, hand crafted objects, fabric and work by noteworthy Scandinavian designers like Josef Frank.
Free time for lunch at Östermalms Saluhall (1888), a food hall and market selling typical Swedish delicacies with areas to sit down for a quick bite.
Free afternoon; return to hotel and dinner on own.


Day 4

Swedish Design and Form Center

Breakfast buffet at hotel.
Day spent on Skeppsholmen, the museum island with several museums and galleries like the Swedish Design and Form Centre. Guided tour of the centre and talk on the history and characteristics of Scandinavian design. After visit, move on to the nearby Moderna Museet, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. The original building, which dates back to 1958, was renovated by Rafael Moneo (1998). Lunch at the cafè of the Musuem of Swedish Architecture, and brief talk on the history of the subject. Free time to visit the Photography Museum and that of Comics (both on the same island), or the nearby National Gallery, with the permanent collection on the first floor dedicated to XX Century Scandinavian and International Design. Return to hotel and dinner on own.


Day 5

Sturebadet Spa

Breakfast buffet at hotel.
Free time for a swim and sauna at the historic Sturebadet spa.
Transfer from the hotel to Kastrup airport.
